THE HIGH TIDE OF ENVIRONMENTALISM

By Cody Knotts
The Weekly Recorder
May 10, 2008

Environmentalism is about to self destruct. As with most political movements, the environmental movement has reached the point that the originial reason for its existence is past and it the thermidorian reaction is about to take place.

Witness the current debate over oil prices. The answer is simple, more domestic production and more refineries combined with less stringent controls. But the mantra of the environmentalist has been for years that no more of the planet can be touched. Lead by their pied piper Al Gore, they have begged for years to have $5 to $7 a gallon gas. Now their wishes are being fufilled.

They argued that higher gases would force the common man (that means you and I) to change our lifestyles. No Sunday drives, no living in the Burbs, no freedom of choice. Instead, we would be forced to live close to our work revitlizing the cities so that more of the land outside can stay pristine. In other words, a fundamental change in the behavior of most of middle class America.

But within their victory lies the seeds of their defeat. Most of the gains have been because the same people’s lifestyles they despise have supported them. Raised on the faulty science of books by authors like Rachel Carson, the middle class of America has bought into the lies.

Why? It was easy, and it cost them little. They were able to still live the life they wanted, the big house in the burbs, the SUV that was safer and more comfortable for their families, and the central air systems that they craved.

So periodically they had to recycle or change their habits. One day bottle water was good for your health, the next it was bad for the environment for example. Rarely aware the that the truth was that they were being manipulated by economic groups that were funded these arguement to change their buying habits.

Then the dream of Al Gore and the left has finally been achieved. We are now having to change our lives. The middle class that they despise must end the dream of summer vacation, Sunday drives, safer cars and a home in the burbs. Instead, we must move to urban dwellings paying rent to other elites, take governmental run mass transit and with the end of summer vacations, they might even achieve the other left wing dream of year round schooling.

But Americans can stop this cycle of destruction. The fact that both Democratic nominees are forced to say they can bring down the cost shows the problems of the enivromental movement.

The forces that have been long afraid to unite against them now have no choice. They also have the upper hand. No, I am not talking about big oil, but instead truck and SUV manufacturers, restaurants, retailers, grocers and home builders. Finally, they will realize that the environmental movement has sold them down the river. Finally they will realize that the environmentalist are not concerned with how the average person lives, but instead are caught up in the cult of the noble savage, believing the world was somehow better when we were busy rubbing sticks together for fire.

Real progress is scientific advancement and the betterment of the average man’s life. High gas prices might finally bring about some momentary common sense for all of us and stop environmentalism once and for all.
